One Anothering

Sunday Class at 9:45AM beginning September 29

Wouldn’t it be amazing if more Christians were able to cultivate humility, curiosity, and courage in this time of political polarization? Let’s choose each other in a politically divided world. “One Anothering,” is a journey toward a deeper love of God and one another. Through this group discussion guide, you’ll begin to discover that every conversation—even the challenging ones about politics—is an opportunity to grow in the fruit of the Spirit. This curriculum by The Colossian Forum invites Christians to cultivate mindsets and habits to grow in Christian virtue. This isn’t about changing political positions, but learning how to hold others’ beliefs –and still be in relationship with them.

Bible Study on 1 John

Sunday Class at 9:45AM beginning September 29

1 John is a book of comfort and challenge. It comforts us with the reminder that we are children of God. It challenges us to make our faith genuine by expressing in our lives what we believe in our hearts. Participants will explore this important book by examining the “love one another verses” and four key questions. This 4-session Bible study explores selected passages from 1 John.

  1. Who is Jesus—really? (1 John 1:1—2:2)
  2. Who are we—really? (1 John 2:29—3:24)
  3. How can we love—really? (1 John 4:1-21)
  4. How can we live—really? (1 John 5:1-13)

Weekly Lectionary Study

Beginning September 4

Ever wish you could study the bible readings before you get to worship? This a great new group for you! The Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) is a three-year cycle of weekly readings (”lections”) used to varying degrees by the vast majority of mainline Protestant churches in Canada and the United States. There are usually four readings for each Sunday–one from the Old Testament, the Psalter, the Epistles, and the Gospels.

Every weekend at Kinsmen, two of the readings assigned for a particular Sunday are read aloud. The purpose of this study group is to focus first on those two readings for the upcoming worship service and, if time is available, the other readings as well. Our goal is to enhance and to deepen our worship experience. We will meet on Wednesdays at 10:00AM. To register, click HERE or go to https://bit.ly/Lectionarygroup

Exploring Alternatives to Division

Wednesdays at 7-8:30 PM
(Beginning October 2 and ending October 30)

Beginning on October 2, we will have a 5-week experience that will help you “Explore Alternatives to Division.” The class is designed to help us bridge divides with people who hold values, perspectives, or political views different from our own. Using the Intercultural Development Continuum as a framework, we’ll take a look at polarization in society and explore options for responding to challenging situations, both within our personal spheres and the public arena. The units are interconnected so attendance at all units is encouraged. The method of instruction will use Zoom initially and we will end the class with an in person potluck meal on October 30.

The facilitator of this class will be the Rev. Dr. Nancy Maeker (Pastor Beth’s mother). She is a retired ELCA pastor who has served in congregations, on a synod staff, and as an executive director of a non-profit. In her current vocation she is working to break down walls that divide people from one another—politically, socially, religiously. Most recently, she facilitated the class for Community of Hope Lay chaplains at Kinsmen. No books are needed.
